Savchenko Problem 2.1.2

Physics · mechanics · thermodynamics

Problem

The puck, which was sliding on the ice, stopped after a time t = 5 s after hitting the stick at a distance l = 20 m from the place of impact. The mass of the washer is m = 100 g. Determine the friction force acting on the washer.
Intuitive explanation

This is a kinematics problem disguised as a friction question—you need to find the deceleration first, then use Newton's second law. Since the puck travels a known distance while coming to rest in a known time, you can use s=v0t+12at2s = v_0 t + \frac{1}{2}at^2 (with final velocity = 0) to find the constant deceleration caused by friction. Once you have acceleration, F=maF = ma gives you the friction force directly.
