Problem
A circular conducting loop lies flat on a table. An observer looking down from above sees the current in the loop flowing clockwise. Identify the direction of the magnetic field at the centre of the loop and give a brief reason.Intuitive explanation
The key is the right-hand rule for current loops: curl your fingers in the direction of current flow, and your thumb points in the direction of the magnetic field through the loop. Since the current flows clockwise when viewed from above, your thumb points downward through the table. The magnetic field at the centre is therefore perpendicular to the loop, pointing downward (into the table).
