Problem

For finite CW complexes XX and YY, show that χ(X×Y)=χ(X)χ(Y)\chi(X \times Y) = \chi(X)\chi(Y).
Intuitive explanation

The Euler characteristic is multiplicative because the product of two CW complexes has a natural cell structure: each cell in X×YX \times Y is a product of a cell from XX and a cell from YY. The key insight is that if XX has cpc_p cells of dimension pp and YY has dqd_q cells of dimension qq, then X×YX \times Y has cpdqc_p d_q cells of dimension p+qp+q. Reorganizing this double sum by total dimension and factoring reveals that χ(X×Y)\chi(X \times Y) splits into a product of the individual Euler characteristics.
