Linear Maps — Sheldon Axler

Mathematics — Linear Algebra · quotient-spaces

Problem

Suppose φ∈L(V,F)\varphi \in \mathcal{L}(V, \mathbf{F}) and φ≠0\varphi \neq 0. Prove that dim⁡V/(null⁡φ)=1\dim V/(\operatorname{null} \varphi) = 1.
Intuitive explanation

A linear functional is a map into the scalar field, so its image is either {0}\{0\} or all of F\mathbf{F}—and since φ≠0\varphi \neq 0, it must be the whole field. The rank-nullity theorem then tells you that the dimension of the quotient space V/(null⁡φ)V/(\operatorname{null} \varphi) equals the dimension of the image, which is dim⁡F=1\dim \mathbf{F} = 1.
