Problem

Explain why the nodes of a standing wave formed on a stretched string remain stationary relative to the string.
Intuitive explanation

A standing wave forms when two traveling waves of equal amplitude and frequency move in opposite directions and interfere. At nodes, the two waves always arrive with opposite displacements that perfectly cancel each other out—one pulls up while the other pulls down by exactly the same amount. Since the net displacement is always zero at these points, the string has nowhere to move, making nodes permanently fixed in space.
