Problem

A probe of mass mm has landed on the equator of a rotating asteroid of mass MM and radius RR. diagram not to scale ![](https://storage.googleapis.com/diraq-contents/PROD/homework-question-parsing/marker/20260305T055505Z/faaf5a8126654a7289336f7ef5f60107/4ab0be532558484d774d4efef9c94a56_img.jpg) The asteroid rotates with angular speed ω\omega. (a) By drawing a free-body diagram for the probe, show that the normal force, NN, on the probe from the asteroid is given by N=m(GMR2−ω2R)N = m\left(\frac{GM}{R^2} - \omega^2 R\right). (b) Deduce that the probe will remain on the asteroid surface only if ω≤GMR3\omega \le \sqrt{\frac{GM}{R^3}}. (c) Another probe orbits the Sun. (c.i) The distance between the probe and the Sun is 4 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Show that the intensity of the solar radiation at the surface of the probe is 85 W m−285\text{ W m}^{-2}. (c.ii) Estimate the equilibrium temperature of the probe assuming it behaves as a black body.
