Problem

Two ideal gases are separated by a thin, highly conducting partition so that energy can pass between them but the gases do not mix. For each set of temperatures below, indicate whether a net transfer of thermal energy will occur across the partition and, if so, state the direction (from gas A to gas B, or from gas B to gas A). (a) TA=310 K,  TB=298 KT_A = 310\,\text{K},\; T_B = 298\,\text{K} (b) TA=310 K,  TB=310 KT_A = 310\,\text{K},\; T_B = 310\,\text{K}
Intuitive explanation

Thermal equilibrium is the fundamental principle here: heat always flows spontaneously from higher to lower temperature until both sides reach the same value. The partition allows energy transfer but prevents mixing, so you just need to compare the absolute temperatures of each gas and apply the direction of heat flow accordingly. When temperatures are equal, the system is already in equilibrium and no net transfer occurs.
