Problem

Do you agree with the following argument? The ℓ1\ell_1-norm of a vector x∈Rmx \in \mathbf{R}^m can be expressed as ∥x∥1=(1/2)inf⁡y≻0(∑i=1mxi2/yi+1Ty).\|x\|_1 = (1/2) \inf_{y \succ 0} \left( \sum_{i=1}^m x_i^2 / y_i + \mathbf{1}^T y \right). Therefore the ℓ1\ell_1-norm approximation problem minimize∥Ax−b∥1\text{minimize} \quad \|Ax - b\|_1 is equivalent to the minimization problem minimizef(x,y)=∑i=1m(aiTx−bi)2/yi+1Ty,(9.62)\text{minimize} \quad f(x, y) = \sum_{i=1}^m (a_i^T x - b_i)^2 / y_i + \mathbf{1}^T y, \tag{9.62} with dom f={(x,y)∈Rn×Rm∣y≻0}\mathbf{dom}\, f = \{(x, y) \in \mathbf{R}^n \times \mathbf{R}^m \mid y \succ 0\}, where aiTa_i^T is the iith row of AA. Since ff is twice differentiable and convex, we can solve the ℓ1\ell_1-norm approximation problem by applying Newton's method to (9.62).
