Problem

Show that for each n∈Zn \in \mathbb{Z} there is a unique function φ\varphi assigning an integer to each finite CW complex, such that (a) φ(X)=φ(Y)\varphi(X) = \varphi(Y) if XX and YY are homeomorphic, (b) φ(X)=φ(A)+φ(X/A)\varphi(X) = \varphi(A) + \varphi(X/A) if AA is a subcomplex of XX, and (c) φ(S0)=n\varphi(S^0) = n. For such a function φ\varphi, show that φ(X)=φ(Y)\varphi(X) = \varphi(Y) if X≃YX \simeq Y.
