A situation closely related to that of Problem 15.4b is the emission of radiation caused by the disappearance of charges and magnetic moments in the annihilation of electrons and positrons to form hadrons in high-energy storage ring experiments. If the differential cross section for the process e+e−→ hadrons is dσ0, without the emission of photons, calculate the cross section for the same process accompanied by a soft photon (ℏω→0) in the energy interval d(ℏω) around ℏω. Compare your results with the quantum-mechanical expressions:
dΩd(ℏω)d2σ=π2αℏωdσ0(s′)s2−4m2ss′2−4m2s′⋅(1−β2cos2θ)2[β2sin2θ+s′+2m2ℏ2ω2(1−β4cos4θ)]d(ℏω)dσ=π4αℏωdσ0(s′)s2−4m2ss′2−4m2s′{21[2β1+β2ln(1−β1+β)−1]+s′+2m2ℏ2ω2[β1ln(1−β1+β)−1]}
where s=(p1+p2)2, s′=(p1+p2−k)2, β= electron v/c in c.m. frame. Neglect the emission of radiation by any of the hadrons, all assumed to be much heavier than the electrons.
The factors proportional to ω2 in the numerators of these expressions can be attributed to the disappearance of the magnetic moments. If you have not included such contributions in your semiclassical calculation, you may consider doing so.
