Problem

For readers familiar with the quotient of a vector space and a subspace: Suppose VV is a normed vector space and UU is a subspace of VV. Define ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| on V/UV/U by ∥f+U∥=inf⁡{∥f+g∥:g∈U}.\|f + U\| = \inf\{\|f + g\| : g \in U\}. (a) Prove that ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| is a norm on V/UV/U if and only if UU is a closed subspace of VV. (b) Prove that if VV is a Banach space and UU is a closed subspace of VV, then V/UV/U (with the norm defined above) is a Banach space. (c) Prove that if UU is a Banach space (with the norm it inherits from VV) and V/UV/U is a Banach space (with the norm defined above), then VV is a Banach space.
