Problem

Prove the following result for rational exponents of a positive real number aa (where p,q,r,sp,q,r,s are integers and q,s>0q,s>0): ap/q  ×  ar/s=a  ps+rqqs\displaystyle a^{p/q}\;\times\;a^{r/s}=a^{\;\frac{ps+rq}{qs}}. a. (i) Express ap/qa^{p/q} and ar/sa^{r/s} using radical notation. b. (ii) Multiply the two radical forms obtained in part (i) and simplify the result so that the new exponent has denominator qsqs. c. (iii) Conclude that ap/q ar/s=ap/q+r/sa^{p/q}\,a^{r/s}=a^{p/q+r/s}, thereby establishing the general product rule for rational exponents.
