Problem

Selected second-ionization-energy (I2I_2) values are shown for two adjacent Period 3 elements.
ElementI2I_2 (kJ mol−1^{-1})
Na4560
Mg1450
a. Write the full electron configurations of (i) Na+^{+} and (ii) Mg+^{+} prior to removal of the second electron. b. Using your configurations, explain in detail why I2I_2 for Na is substantially larger than I2I_2 for Mg. c. Predict whether the difference between I2I_2 values for Al and Si will be greater than, less than, or approximately equal to the difference observed between Na and Mg. Support your prediction with atomic-level reasoning.
