Problem
Two horizontal parallel rails are connected by resistors at both ends. A movable segment with a 5.00 Ω resistor slides along these rails in a vertical, uniform magnetic field.
[Figure: Diagram showing parallel rails with resistors and sliding segment]
1) If the sliding segment is being pulled to the right with a constant velocity, in what direction will the induced current in the 5.00 Ω rod flow?
2) If the sliding segment moves to the right with a constant velocity of 2.00 m/s and the magnetic field is B = 2.50 T (vertically downward), what is the magnitude of the induced emf in the 5.00 Ω rod?
3) What is the current in the circuit if R₁ = 10.0 Ω and R₂ = 15.0 Ω?
4) If the segment with the 5.00 Ω rod could slide along the rails and was released at a given time, how would this segment move (qualitatively)?
