Problem

The following data are provided: • Mass of Earth =6.0×1024 kg= 6.0\times10^{24}\,\text{kg} • Radius of Earth =6.4×106 m= 6.4\times10^{6}\,\text{m} • Mass of Moon =7.3×1022 kg= 7.3\times10^{22}\,\text{kg} • Radius of Moon =1.74×106 m= 1.74\times10^{6}\,\text{m} • Gravitational constant G=6.67×10−11 N m2kg−2G = 6.67\times10^{-11}\,\text{N m}^2\text{kg}^{-2} a. (i) Calculate the minimum speed needed to escape from the Moon’s surface. b. (ii) Calculate the corresponding speed for Earth’s surface using the given data. c. (iii) Find the ratio of the two speeds obtained above and interpret its physical meaning.
