Problem

Consider the functions y=tan⁡xy=\tan x and y=sec⁡xy=\sec x. a. (i) Explain why every real number xx satisfying cos⁡x=0\cos x = 0 corresponds to a vertical asymptote of each of these functions. b. (ii) Using the periodicity of cos⁡x\cos x, describe the complete set of vertical asymptotes of y=sec⁡xy=\sec x in words. c. (iii) Show that between any two consecutive values of xx for which cos⁡x=0\cos x = 0, there is exactly one value where sin⁡x=0\sin x = 0. How does this fact determine the positions of the vertical asymptotes of y=csc⁡xy=\csc x?
