Problem

A 2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg} fireworks shell is moving straight upward at 50 m s−150\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} relative to the ground when it reaches the top of its trajectory and bursts into two fragments. Air resistance may be ignored during the brief explosion. Immediately after the burst: • Fragment S has mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} and is observed to move horizontally due east at 40 m s−140\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} relative to the ground. • Fragment L has mass 1.5 kg1.5\,\text{kg}. (a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the velocity of Fragment L immediately after the explosion. (b) Calculate the increase in kinetic energy of the two-fragment system produced by the explosion. (c) Fragment L continues to move after the burst under the influence of gravity alone. Assuming the explosion occurs at the highest point of the original shell’s flight, find the additional vertical height Fragment L will rise before momentarily coming to rest relative to the ground.
