Problem

a. The quality factor of an oscillator is the ratio of its initial energy to the energy lost during a phase change of 1 rad. Express the quality factor through the damping coefficient γ\gamma and the free oscillation frequency ω0\omega_0 (γ\gamma ≪\ll ω0\omega_0). How is the quality factor Q related to the number of oscillations during which the energy of the oscillator decreases by a factor e? A single crystal of sapphire in vacuum at low temperature and appropriate suspension has Q = 108 − 109. The oscillations frequency of the monocrystal is ω0\omega_0 = 104 s−1. Estimate how many times the oscillations amplitude of the crystal will change in a day.
