Problem

Let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space and ff a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form on VV. Associated with ff is a 'natural' isomorphism of VV onto the dual space V∗V^*, this isomorphism being the transformation LfL_f of Section 10.1. Using LfL_f, show that for each basis B={α1,…,αn}\mathfrak{B} = \{\alpha_1, \ldots, \alpha_n\} of VV there exists a unique basis B′={α1′,…,αn′}\mathfrak{B}' = \{\alpha_1', \ldots, \alpha_n'\} of VV such that f(αi,αj′)=δijf(\alpha_i, \alpha_j') = \delta_{ij}. Then show that for every vector α\alpha in VV we have α=∑if(α,αi′)αi=∑if(αi,α)αi′.\alpha = \sum_i f(\alpha, \alpha_i') \alpha_i = \sum_i f(\alpha_i, \alpha) \alpha_i'.
