Problem

(A Density Matrix Problem). (1) Show that the density matrix for an ensemble of spin-1/21/2 particles may be written as ρ=12(I+a⋅σ)\rho = \tfrac{1}{2}(I + \mathbf{a}\cdot\boldsymbol{\sigma}) where a\mathbf{a} is a cc-number vector. (2) Show that a\mathbf{a} is the mean polarization, ⟨σˉ⟩\langle\boldsymbol{\bar{\sigma}}\rangle. (3) An ensemble of electrons in a magnetic field B=Bk\mathbf{B} = Bk, is in thermal equilibrium at temperature TT. Construct the density matrix for this ensemble. Calculate ⟨μˉ⟩\langle\bar{\boldsymbol{\mu}}\rangle.
