Problem

A ship departs harbour HH and sails along the following three legs: (i) 4040 nautical miles on a bearing of 060∘060^{\circ}, (ii) 2525 nautical miles on a bearing of 310∘310^{\circ}, (iii) 3030 nautical miles due south. Take 11 nautical mile =1.852 km=1.852\text{ km} and let east be +x+x, north be +y+y. Answer the questions below: a. (i) Convert each leg into kilometres and express it as a displacement vector in component form. b. (ii) Determine the ship’s resultant displacement vector from HH in kilometres. c. (iii) Find the magnitude of this resultant displacement and give its bearing measured clockwise from north.
