Problem

Suppose v∈Vv \in V and v≠0v \neq 0. Prove that v/∥v∥v/\|v\| is the unique closest element on the unit sphere of VV to vv. More precisely, prove that if u∈Vu \in V and ∥u∥=1\|u\| = 1, then ∥v−v∥v∥∥≤∥v−u∥,\left\|v - \frac{v}{\|v\|}\right\| \leq \|v - u\|, with equality only if u=v/∥v∥u = v/\|v\|.
