Problem

A rectangular lawn has length (x+7) m(x+7)\,\text{m} and breadth (x−3) m(x-3)\,\text{m}. A uniform concrete walkway of width 2 m2\,\text{m} is laid all around the outside of the lawn. (i) Write an expression for the total outer dimensions of the region including the walkway. (ii) Hence obtain a simplified polynomial expression for the total area (lawn + walkway) in terms of xx. (iii) Calculate the total area when x=10 mx=10\,\text{m}. (iv) State the degree of the polynomial obtained in part (ii) and classify it by the number of its terms. a. (i) Outer dimensions. b. (ii) Total area polynomial. c. (iii) Area for x=10x=10. d. (iv) Degree and classification.
