Problem

Suppose VV is a real Hilbert space and T∈B(V)T \in \mathcal{B}(V). The complexification of TT is the function TC:VC→VCT_{\mathbf{C}} : V_{\mathbf{C}} \to V_{\mathbf{C}} defined by TC(f+ig)=Tf+iTgT_{\mathbf{C}}(f + ig) = Tf + iTg for f,g∈Vf, g \in V (see Exercise 4 in Section 8B for the definition of VCV_{\mathbf{C}}). ((a)) Show that TCT_{\mathbf{C}} is a bounded operator on the complex Hilbert space VCV_{\mathbf{C}} and ∥TC∥=∥T∥\|T_{\mathbf{C}}\| = \|T\|. ((b)) Show that TCT_{\mathbf{C}} is invertible if and only if TT is invertible. ((c)) Show that (TC)∗=(T∗)C(T_{\mathbf{C}})^* = (T^*)_{\mathbf{C}}. ((d)) Show that TT is self-adjoint if and only if TCT_{\mathbf{C}} is self-adjoint. ((e)) Use the previous parts of this exercise and 10.49 and 10.38 to show that if TT is self-adjoint and V≠{0}V \neq \{0\}, then sp(T)≠∅\mathrm{sp}(T) \neq \emptyset.
