Problem

Strictly positive solution of linear equations. Suppose A∈Rm×nA \in \mathbf{R}^{m \times n}, b∈Rmb \in \mathbf{R}^m, with b∈R(A)b \in \mathcal{R}(A). Show that there exists an xx satisfying x≻0,Ax=bx \succ 0, \qquad Ax = b if and only if there exists no λ\lambda with ATλ⪰0,ATλ≠0,bTλ≤0.A^T \lambda \succeq 0, \qquad A^T \lambda \neq 0, \qquad b^T \lambda \leq 0. Hint. First prove the following fact from linear algebra: cTx=dc^T x = d for all xx satisfying Ax=bAx = b if and only if there is a vector λ\lambda such that c=ATλc = A^T \lambda, d=bTλd = b^T \lambda.
