Problem

Suppose u(r,ϕ)u(r,\phi) is a function R2→R\mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R} given in terms of polar coordinates. (a) Show that the Laplace equation for u(r,ϕ)u(r,\phi) is 1rur+urr+1r2uϕϕ=0.\frac{1}{r}u_r + u_{rr} + \frac{1}{r^2}u_{\phi\phi} = 0. (b) Show that u(r,ϕ)=r2cos⁡(2ϕ)u(r,\phi) = r^2\cos(2\phi) is harmonic on C\mathbb{C}. Generalize. (c) If u(r,ϕ)u(r,\phi) depends only on rr, when is uu harmonic? (d) If u(r,ϕ)u(r,\phi) depends only on ϕ\phi, when is uu harmonic?
