Operators on Inner Product Spaces — Sheldon Axler

Mathematics — Linear Algebra · spectral-theorem

Problem

Suppose F=C\mathbf{F} = \mathbf{C} and E⊆L(V)\mathcal{E} \subseteq \mathcal{L}(V). Prove that there is an orthonormal basis of VV with respect to which every element of E\mathcal{E} has a diagonal matrix if and only if SS and TT are commuting normal operators for all S,T∈ES, T \in \mathcal{E}. This exercise extends the complex spectral theorem to the context of a collection of commuting normal operators.
