Problem

Show that if Un(x)U_n(\mathbf{x}) and Uk(x)U_k(\mathbf{x}) are maps from S3→S3S^3 \to S^3 with winding numbers nn and kk, then Un(x)Uk(x)U_n(\mathbf{x})U_k(\mathbf{x}) is a map with winding number n+kn + k. Hint: consider smoothly deforming Un(x)U_n(\mathbf{x}) to equal one for x3<0x_3 < 0. How should Uk(x)U_k(\mathbf{x}) be deformed?
