Problem

Suppose (X,S,μ)(X, \mathcal{S}, \mu) is a σ\sigma-finite measure space and h∈L∞(μ)h \in L^\infty(\mu). As usual, let Mh∈B(L2(μ))M_h \in \mathcal{B}\bigl(L^2(\mu)\bigr) denote the multiplication operator defined by Mhf=fhM_h f = fh. Prove that MhM_h is a partial isometry if and only if there exists a set E∈SE \in \mathcal{S} such that ∣h∣=χE|h| = \chi_E. [A bounded operator TT on a Hilbert space is called a partial isometry if ∥Tf∥=∥f∥\|Tf\| = \|f\| for all f∈(null T)⊥f \in (\mathrm{null}\, T)^\perp.]
