Problem

Mars is at its closest approach to the Sun during the summer months in its southern hemisphere. (a) Using Eq. (19.5), estimate the ratio of the average temperatures on Mars when it is at perihelion and aphelion. (b) Considering the tilt of the planet's rotation axis, describe the seasonal behavior of the two polar ice caps.
