Problem

Suppose that ff is a function of two variables (yy and zz) only. Show that the gradient ∇f=(∂f/∂y)y^+(∂f/∂z)z^\nabla f = (\partial f/\partial y)\hat{\mathbf{y}} + (\partial f/\partial z)\hat{\mathbf{z}} transforms as a vector under rotations, Eq. 1.29. [*Hint:* (∂f/∂yˉ)=(∂f/∂y)(∂y/∂yˉ)+(∂f/∂z)(∂z/∂yˉ)(\partial f/\partial \bar{y}) = (\partial f/\partial y)(\partial y/\partial \bar{y}) + (\partial f/\partial z)(\partial z/\partial \bar{y}), and the analogous formula for ∂f/∂zˉ\partial f/\partial \bar{z}. We know that yˉ=ycos⁡ϕ+zsin⁡ϕ\bar{y} = y \cos\phi + z \sin\phi and zˉ=−ysin⁡ϕ+zcos⁡ϕ\bar{z} = -y \sin\phi + z \cos\phi; "solve" these equations for yy and zz (as functions of yˉ\bar{y} and zˉ\bar{z}), and compute the needed derivatives ∂y/∂yˉ\partial y/\partial \bar{y}, ∂z/∂yˉ\partial z/\partial \bar{y}, etc.]
