Problem

A particle QQ has mass 2m2m and two other particles PP, RR, each of mass mm, are connected to QQ by light inextensible strings of length aa. The system is free to move on a smooth horizontal table. Initially PP, QQ, RR are at the points (0,a)(0,a), (0,0)(0,0), (0,−a)(0,-a) respectively so that they lie in a straight line with the strings taut. QQ is then projected in the positive xx-direction with speed uu. Express the conservation of linear momentum and energy for this system in terms of the coordinates xx (the displacement of QQ) and θ\theta (the angle turned by each of the strings). Show that θ\theta satisfies the equation θ˙2=u2a2(12−cos⁡2θ)\dot{\theta}^2 = \frac{u^2}{a^2}\left(\frac{1}{2-\cos^2\theta}\right) and deduce that PP and RR will collide after a time au∫0π/2[2−cos⁡2θ]12 dθ.\frac{a}{u}\int_0^{\pi/2}\left[2-\cos^2\theta\right]^{\frac{1}{2}}\,d\theta.
