Problem

Let AA be a 2×22 \times 2 matrix over a field FF. Then the set of all matrices of the form f(A)f(A), where ff is a polynomial over FF, is a commutative ring KK with identity. If BB is a 2×22 \times 2 matrix over KK, the determinant of BB is then a 2×22 \times 2 matrix over FF, of the form f(A)f(A). Suppose II is the 2×22 \times 2 identity matrix over FF and that BB is the 2×22 \times 2 matrix over KK B=[A−A11I−A12I−A21IA−A22I].B = \begin{bmatrix} A - A_{11}I & -A_{12}I \\ -A_{21}I & A - A_{22}I \end{bmatrix}. Show that det⁡B=f(A)\det B = f(A), where f=x2−(A11+A22)x+det⁡Af = x^2 - (A_{11} + A_{22})x + \det A, and also that f(A)=0f(A) = 0.
