Problem

Let DD be a UFD. An element d∈Dd \in D is a greatest common divisor of aa and bb in DD if d∣ad \mid a and d∣bd \mid b and dd is divisible by any other element dividing both aa and bb. ((a)) If DD is a PID and aa and bb are both nonzero elements of DD, prove there exists a unique greatest common divisor of aa and bb up to associates. That is, if dd and d′d' are both greatest common divisors of aa and bb, then dd and d′d' are associates. We write gcd⁡(a,b)\gcd(a,b) for the greatest common divisor of aa and bb. ((b)) Let DD be a PID and aa and bb be nonzero elements of DD. Prove that there exist elements ss and tt in DD such that gcd⁡(a,b)=as+bt\gcd(a,b) = as + bt.
