Problem

This problem concerns the question of when the group Zn∗\mathbb{Z}_n^* of congruence classes mod nn of integers coprime to nn is cyclic. (a) Show that Z2∗\mathbb{Z}_2^* and Z4∗\mathbb{Z}_4^* are cyclic but Z8∗\mathbb{Z}_8^* is not cyclic and deduce that Z2r∗\mathbb{Z}_{2^r}^* is also not cyclic when r>3r > 3. (b) Show that if Zn∗\mathbb{Z}_n^* is cyclic then n=2n = 2, 44, prp^r, or 2pr2p^r for some odd prime pp. Hint: Zn∗\mathbb{Z}_n^* has even order if n>2n > 2. (c) The group Zpr∗\mathbb{Z}_{p^r}^* is known to be cyclic when pp is an odd prime. Show that this implies that Z2pr∗\mathbb{Z}_{2p^r}^* is cyclic.
