Problem

The ions N3−\text{N}^{3-}, O2−\text{O}^{2-}, F−\text{F}^-, and Na+\text{Na}^+ are isoelectronic with one another. (a) Rank these four ions in order of increasing ionic radius. Write your answer in the form: smallest < \dots < largest. (b) Explain how the magnitude of the nuclear charge influences the relative sizes of isoelectronic ions. (c) Predict whether the ionic radius of Mg2+\text{Mg}^{2+} would be larger or smaller than that of Na+\text{Na}^+, and justify your prediction.
