Problem

Let TT be a linear operator on C2C^2 which preserves the quadratic form x12−x22x_1^2 - x_2^2. Show that (a) det⁡(T)=±1\det(T) = \pm 1. (b) If MM is the matrix of TT in the standard basis, then M22=±M11M_{22} = \pm M_{11}, M21=±M12M_{21} = \pm M_{12}, M112−M122=1M_{11}^2 - M_{12}^2 = 1. (c) If det⁡M=1\det M = 1, then there is a non-zero complex number cc such that M=12[c+1cc−1cc−1cc+1c].M = \frac{1}{2}\begin{bmatrix} c + \frac{1}{c} & c - \frac{1}{c} \\ c - \frac{1}{c} & c + \frac{1}{c} \end{bmatrix}. (d) If det⁡M=−1\det M = -1 then there is a complex number cc such that M=12[c+1cc−1c−c+1c−c−1c].M = \frac{1}{2}\begin{bmatrix} c + \frac{1}{c} & c - \frac{1}{c} \\ -c + \frac{1}{c} & -c - \frac{1}{c} \end{bmatrix}.
