Problem

Consider a system of total angular momentum j=1j = 1. We are interested here in the measurement of J^y\hat{J}_y; its matrix is given by J^y=ℏ2(0−i0i0−i0i0).\hat{J}_y = \frac{\hbar}{\sqrt{2}}\begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i & 0 \\ i & 0 & -i \\ 0 & i & 0 \end{pmatrix}. (a) What are the possible values will we obtain when measuring J^y\hat{J}_y? (b) Calculate ⟨J^z⟩\langle \hat{J}_z \rangle, ⟨J^z2⟩\langle \hat{J}_z^2 \rangle, and ΔJz\Delta J_z if the system is in the state jy=ℏj_y = \hbar. (c) Repeat (b) for ⟨J^x⟩\langle \hat{J}_x \rangle, ⟨J^x2⟩\langle \hat{J}_x^2 \rangle, and ΔJx\Delta J_x.
