Problem

This exercise outlines how to extend some of the results of this chapter to the Riemann sphere as defined in Section 3.2. Suppose G⊆CG \subseteq \mathbb{C} is a region that contains 00, let ff be a continuous function on GG, and let γ⊂G∖{0}\gamma \subset G \setminus \{0\} be a piecewise smooth path in GG avoiding the origin, parametrized as γ(t)\gamma(t), a≤t≤ba \leq t \leq b. (a) Show that ∫γf(z) dz=∫σf ⁣(1z)1z2 dz(5.2)\int_\gamma f(z)\,dz = \int_\sigma f\!\left(\frac{1}{z}\right)\frac{1}{z^2}\,dz \tag{5.2} where σ(t):=1γ(t)\sigma(t) := \frac{1}{\gamma(t)}, a≤t≤ba \leq t \leq b. (b) Now suppose γ\gamma is closed and lim⁡z→0f ⁣(1z)1z2=L\lim_{z\to 0} f\!\left(\frac{1}{z}\right)\frac{1}{z^2} = L is finite. Let H:={1z:z∈G∖{0}}H := \left\{\frac{1}{z} : z \in G \setminus \{0\}\right\} and define the function g:H∪{0}→Cg : H \cup \{0\} \to \mathbb{C} by g(z):={f ⁣(1z)1z2if z∈H,Lif z=0.g(z) := \begin{cases} f\!\left(\frac{1}{z}\right)\frac{1}{z^2} & \text{if } z \in H, \\ L & \text{if } z = 0. \end{cases} Thus gg is continuous on H∪{0}H \cup \{0\} and (5.2) gives the identity ∫γf=∫σg\int_\gamma f = \int_\sigma g. In particular, we can transfer certain properties between these two integrals. For example, if ∫σg\int_\sigma g is path independent, so is ∫γf\int_\gamma f. Here is but one application: i) Show that ∫γzn dz\int_\gamma z^n\,dz is path independent for any integer n≠−1n \neq -1. ii) Conclude (once more) that ∫γzn dz=0\int_\gamma z^n\,dz = 0 for any integer n≠−1n \neq -1.
