Problem

A stone is projected from the origin with speed 30 m s−130\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} making an angle of 37∘37^{\circ} with the horizontal. For the portion of the flight during which the stone is above ground level, (i) obtain the quadratic equation whose roots give the possible horizontal distances xx at which the height of the stone is 10 m10\,\text{m}. (ii) Solve the quadratic equation to find the two admissible values of xx (if any). Use g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (iii) State which of the two values corresponds to the ascending part of the trajectory and which to the descending part, giving a brief justification.
