Problem

Let VV be a complex inner product space and TT a self-adjoint linear operator on VV. Show that (a) ∥α+iTα∥=∥α−iTα∥\|\alpha + iT\alpha\| = \|\alpha - iT\alpha\| for every α\alpha in VV. (b) α+iTα=β+iTβ\alpha + iT\alpha = \beta + iT\beta if and only if α=β\alpha = \beta. (c) I+iTI + iT is non-singular. (d) I−iTI - iT is non-singular. (e) Now suppose VV is finite-dimensional, and prove that U=(I−iT)(I+iT)−1U = (I - iT)(I + iT)^{-1} is a unitary operator; UU is called the Cayley transform of TT. In a certain sense, U=f(T)U = f(T), where f(x)=(1−ix)/(1+ix)f(x) = (1 - ix)/(1 + ix).
