Problem

A particle PP of mass mm can slide along a smooth rigid straight wire. The wire has one of its points fixed at the origin OO, and is made to rotate in the (x,y)(x,y)-plane with angular speed Ω\Omega. By using the vector equation of motion of PP in polar co-ordinates, show that rr, the distance of PP from OO, satisfies the equation r¨−Ω2r=0,\ddot{r} - \Omega^2 r = 0, and find a second equation involving NN, where Nθ^N\hat{\boldsymbol{\theta}} is the force the wire exerts on PP. [Ignore gravity in this question.] Initially, PP is at rest (relative to the wire) at a distance aa from OO. Find rr as a function of tt in the subsequent motion, and deduce the corresponding formula for NN.
