Problem

Consider the states ∣ψ⟩=3i∣ϕ1⟩−7i∣ϕ2⟩|\psi\rangle = 3i|\phi_1\rangle - 7i|\phi_2\rangle and ∣χ⟩=−∣ϕ1⟩+2i∣ϕ2⟩|\chi\rangle = -|\phi_1\rangle + 2i|\phi_2\rangle, where ∣ϕ1⟩|\phi_1\rangle and ∣ϕ2⟩|\phi_2\rangle are orthonormal. (a) Calculate ∣ψ+χ⟩|\psi + \chi\rangle and ⟨ψ+χ∣\langle\psi + \chi|. (b) Calculate the scalar products ⟨ψ∣χ⟩\langle\psi|\chi\rangle and ⟨χ∣ψ⟩\langle\chi|\psi\rangle. Are they equal? (c) Show that the states ∣ψ⟩|\psi\rangle and ∣χ⟩|\chi\rangle satisfy the Schwarz inequality. (d) Show that the states ∣ψ⟩|\psi\rangle and ∣χ⟩|\chi\rangle satisfy the triangle inequality.
