Problem

Suppose that UU is a subspace of VV such that V/UV/U is finite-dimensional. (a) Show that if WW is a finite-dimensional subspace of VV and V=U+WV = U + W, then dim⁡W≥dim⁡V/U\dim W \geq \dim V/U. (b) Prove that there exists a finite-dimensional subspace WW of VV such that dim⁡W=dim⁡V/U\dim W = \dim V/U and V=U⊕WV = U \oplus W.
