Problem

Consider a mine of depth dd drilled straight towards the centre of the Earth. The Earth is assumed to have uniform density. a. (i) Using the idea that only the mass lying at a distance less than (R−d)(R-d) from the centre contributes to the gravitational force, derive an exact expression for the acceleration due to gravity gdg_d at depth dd below the surface. b. (ii) For d≪Rd \ll R, simplify the result obtained in part (i) to the linear form gd=g(1−dR)g_d = g\bigl(1-\frac{d}{R}\bigr). c. (iii) Show mathematically that g→0g \rightarrow 0 as d→Rd \rightarrow R and interpret the physical meaning of this result. d. (iv) Find the value of gd/gg_d/g when d=R2d = \tfrac{R}{2}. Comment on how rapidly gg falls with depth in comparison with altitude.
