Problem

Suppose AA and BB are upper-triangular matrices of the same size, with α1,…,αn\alpha_1, \ldots, \alpha_n on the diagonal of AA and β1,…,βn\beta_1, \ldots, \beta_n on the diagonal of BB. (a) Show that A+BA + B is an upper-triangular matrix with α1+β1,…,αn+βn\alpha_1 + \beta_1, \ldots, \alpha_n + \beta_n on the diagonal. (b) Show that ABAB is an upper-triangular matrix with α1β1,…,αnβn\alpha_1\beta_1, \ldots, \alpha_n\beta_n on the diagonal. The results in this exercise are used in the proof of 5.81.
