Problem

A game produces four mutually exclusive outcomes whose probabilities depend on a parameter kk as shown below: 1. A∩BA\cap B occurs with probability kk, 2. A∩BcA\cap B^{c} occurs with probability 0.30.3, 3. Ac∩BA^{c}\cap B occurs with probability 0.20.2, 4. Ac∩BcA^{c}\cap B^{c} occurs with probability 0.5−k0.5-k. Here AA denotes that the player scores at least 22 points, while BB denotes that the player uses a bonus card during the turn. a. (a) Using the fact that the total probability of all outcomes is 11, state the range of permissible values of kk. b. (b) Compute P(A)P(A) and P(B)P(B) in terms of kk and hence derive an equation that must be satisfied if AA and BB are to be independent. c. (c) Solve the equation obtained in part (b) to find all permissible values of kk that make AA and BB independent. d. (d) For each value of kk found in part (c), calculate P(A∩B)P(A\cap B) and comment on whether the independence condition is met in practice.
