Problem

Measurements of the viscosity, η\eta, of argon gas (40^{40}Ar) over a range of pressures yield the following results at two temperatures: at 500 Kη≈3.5×10−5 kg m−1 s−1;at 2000 Kη≈8.0×10−5 kg m−1 s−1.\begin{aligned} &\text{at } 500\text{ K} \quad \eta \approx 3.5 \times 10^{-5}\text{ kg m}^{-1}\text{ s}^{-1};\\ &\text{at } 2000\text{ K} \quad \eta \approx 8.0 \times 10^{-5}\text{ kg m}^{-1}\text{ s}^{-1}. \end{aligned} The viscosity is found to be approximately independent of pressure. Discuss the extent to which these data are consistent with (i) simple kinetic theory, and (ii) the diameter of the argon atom (0.34 nm) deduced from the density of solid argon at low temperatures.
