Mathematics — Linear Algebra · self-adjoint-operators

Problem

Fix u,x∈Vu, x \in V. Define T∈L(V)T \in \mathcal{L}(V) by Tv=⟨v,u⟩xTv = \langle v, u \rangle x for every v∈Vv \in V. (a) Prove that if VV is a real vector space, then TT is self-adjoint if and only if the list u,xu, x is linearly dependent. (b) Prove that TT is normal if and only if the list u,xu, x is linearly dependent.
