Problem

Derive a 2D differential equation describing the propagation of relatively long (λ≫h)(\lambda \gg h) waves on the surface of a broad, plane layer of thickness hh, of an ideal, incompressible fluid, and use it to calculate the longest standing wave modes and frequencies in a layer covering a spherical planet of radius R≫hR \gg h. Hint: The last task requires some familiarity with the basic properties of spherical harmonics 16{ }^{16}.
